Biography

Jozien Bensing has always been active in healthcare as a psychologist. After studying clinical psychology at Utrecht University, she worked as a scientific researcher at the then Netherlands Institute for General Practice (NHI). Jozien completed her PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam with a dissertation on physician-patient communication. In 1985, she became the director of NIVEL (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research). Since 1993, she has combined this role with a part-time professorship at Utrecht University with a focus on health psychology. She is the president of the European Association for Communication in Health Care (EACH), a member of the Advisory Board of Patient Education Counseling, and serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychiatry in Health Care. Additionally, she holds various advisory and management roles at the intersection of science, policy, and healthcare. She is a member of the Health Council, the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (AWT), the Social Sciences Council of KNAW (member of the daily board), and the National Genomics Coordination Body, among others. Jozien Bensing is married and balances her professional work with caring for two children.
