Biography

Juan Alvarez-Vilanova is a PhD candidate in Economic Geography at the London School of Economics (LSE). His research is rooted in the intersection of regional economic inequality and the role of multinationals in foreign direct investment (FDI) and the economic development process. He is particularly interested in the European Union’s initiatives focusing on green and digital resilient regional development strategies. Juan completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Geography at University College London in 2014, followed by four years of experience in local government consulting, where he assisted councils in the UK with data-led interventions related to homelessness prevention and economic development strategies. In 2020, he completed his Master of Science in Local Economic Development at LSE, where he also worked as a consultant for the World Bank. His provisional thesis title is 'Regional Economic Inequalities in a Changing Global Order: Place-Based Development Strategies, FDI Attraction, and Resilient Global Value Chains.' He has been awarded a full ESRC Doctoral scholarship for the period 2022-2026.
