Biography

Juan Caicedo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He conducts research in data science with a focus on computer vision and machine learning, applying these techniques to biological images generated by microscopes. Traditionally, such images have relied on qualitative analyses of cellular structures. Juan's work aims to quantify cellular imaging data to overcome the limitations of human vision, enhancing the understanding of cellular organization principles. His research is technically demanding, comparing the analysis of cellular images to the discovery of new planets in a galaxy. This involves training computer vision models to analyze images that are captured using unique color schemes and under varying microscope conditions. Additionally, Juan aims to develop a model for “universal morphology” that can recognize cellular patterns across diverse microscopy settings. His approach has the potential to foster innovative medical methodologies. Juan earned his Ph.D. from the National University of Colombia and was previously a fellow at the Broad Institute before joining UW–Madison. He appreciates the collaborative and rich resources available within the biological sciences and data science communities at the university, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary research for making meaningful impacts.
