Biography

Professor Juan Cruz, originally from Palencia, Spain, has an extensive career as an artist and educator, operating within a broad spectrum of institutions. He studied Painting History and Theory of Modern Art at Chelsea College of Art, graduating in 1993, and later participated in an Erasmus exchange program at Hochschule der Künste Berlin. His professional trajectory includes independent work as an artist and writer, alongside several significant teaching appointments, starting with a permanent position in Goldsmiths in 2000. Cruz's artistic output has been widely exhibited in prominent venues including Matt’s Gallery and Camden Arts Centre in London, Serralves Foundation in Porto, and Galeria Elba Benitez in Madrid. He was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in 1999 and became an Artist Fellow at Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge in 2000. Additionally, he has been involved in various leadership and governance roles in art organizations, fostering collaborations and cultural exchanges within the community. At the Royal College of Art, where he has served as a Professor and Dean, Cruz has overseen significant growth in postgraduate communities and initiated numerous public programming projects, including fundraising efforts for new artistic spaces. He is actively engaged in research and has published work related to translation and contemporary art practices.
