Dr. Jud Mathews

Biography

Jud Mathews is a Professor at the Penn State School of International Affairs and serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Penn State Law. His scholarship adopts a comparative interdisciplinary approach to questions of public law, having written extensively on constitutional rights adjudication and administrative law. His research explores the intersections of political economy and judicial deference doctrines within contemporary political theory, particularly in relation to the dynamics between courts and agencies. Mathews is currently engaged in writing a book titled 'Constitutional Rights, Private Law, Judicial Power', which examines cross-national perspectives on how constitutional rights shape the legal relations between private parties. Prior to his position at Penn State Law, he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Law and has experience as a law clerk for Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, an M.A. from Yale University, and an A.B. from Princeton University.
