Judith Chester is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University. She holds the Mollie B. & Richard Williford Professorship in Petroleum Geology and has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of geology. Her research interests primarily include deformation alteration reactions, faulting related to earthquake nucleation, and rupture propagation within the continental crust. Chester is also involved in mechanisms of creep, compaction, and the mechanics of reservoir rock. She has participated in projects that provide geologic constraints and focus on the physics of earthquake rupture, notably the collaborative research on the structural-petrologic characterization of the San Andreas Fault Zone. Chester has served as the Vice Chair for the Science Planning Committee of the Southern California Earthquake Center since 2014. With a strong educational background, she earned her Ph.D. in Geology from Texas A&M University, along with an M.S. also from Texas A&M and a B.S. from the University of California at Los Angeles. Her academic excellence has been recognized with awards such as the Paul G. Silver Award for Outstanding Scientific Service from the American Geophysical Union in 2019.
