Biography

Judith Freedman is an Emeritus Professor of Tax Law and Policy at the University of Oxford, where she served from 2001 to 2019. Before joining Oxford, she worked in the corporate tax department of Freshfields and held academic positions at the University of Surrey and the London School of Economics (LSE). While at LSE, she lectured and researched in tax and company law and was seconded as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. Her research focuses on taxation, with particular interests in corporate and business taxation, tax policy design, the interface of law and accounting, tax avoidance, and corporate social responsibility. She was instrumental in establishing the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation and participated in setting up the MSc in Taxation at Oxford. Judith has served on various committees related to tax and company law, including the Law Society, DTI, and the Aaronson Tax Avoidance Study Group. She held the Anton Philips Visiting Chair at the University of Tilburg and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales. Judith is the general editor of the British Tax Review and is actively involved in tax research and education. In recognition of her contributions to tax research, she was appointed CBE in 2013 and elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2016.
