Biography

Judith Herrin has had a long career teaching Byzantine medieval history, notably at Princeton University and King's College London, where she has recently retired to pursue research. Her research is currently centered on the city of Ravenna and its historical significance. Judith is involved with several notable academic and cultural institutions, including the advisory boards of the Symmeikta journal in Athens and the Stavros Niarchos-Koç Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at Koç University in Istanbul. She is also a continuing member of the Journal of Ecclesiastical History and has served as the elected President of the Association Internationale des Etudes Byzantines from 2011 to 2012. Judith has contributed significantly to Byzantine studies, including serving as the Founding Editor of the Translated Texts for Byzantinists series published by Liverpool University Press. Her selected publications include "Ravenna: Capital of Empire, Crucible of Europe" (Penguin Books, 2021), which won the Duff Cooper Prize and was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize. Other notable works include "Byzantium: The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire" (2008) and "Unrivalled Influence: Women and Empire in Byzantium" (2013). Judith has actively engaged in public scholarship, with appearances on various media platforms and at literary festivals.
