Biography

Judith H. Newman is a Professor of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Emmanuel College and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. She also has a cross-appointment in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. As a faculty member of the Centre for Jewish Studies, she specializes in Hebrew Bible and Jewish literature from the Temple period. Her current research interests focus on ritual performance texts, particularly at the intersection of community formation in early Judaism and Christianity. Newman is engaged in exploring the development of scripture, early biblical interpretation, and methods of studying the Bible in the context of early Judaism and Christianity. Her emerging projects include a study of Hasmonean period literature, especially the book of Judith, and an investigation into time, temporality, and liturgy.
