Biography

Judith Simcox is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and serves as the Associate Director of the Metabolomics Core at the UW Comprehensive Diabetes Center. Her research focuses on mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to study the regulation of lipid signaling in metabolic diseases. Utilizing both mice and human population studies, she aims to explore the physiological impacts of lipid signaling on energy expenditure. Her work combines RNA-sequencing and lipidomic datasets to identify novel transcriptional regulators of lipid metabolism, targeting specific lipid species associated with type 2 diabetes. Simcox has engaged in human population studies to uncover potential biomarkers for metabolic syndrome across diverse demographics and has collaborated on the MIDUS project to assess plasma lipid changes in midlife populations. She uses machine learning techniques on plasma lipidomics of MIDUS participants to identify inflammation and predictive markers of metabolic diseases, particularly in African American populations.
