Judith Weisenfeld joined Princeton faculty in 2007. Her research and teaching focus on African American religious history, the intersections of religion and race, and religion in modern American culture. She is the author of several important works, including "Black Religion and Madness: Race, American Psychiatry, and Slavery's Wake" (NYU Press, 2025), "New World A-Coming: Black Religion and Racial Identity in the Great Migration" (NYU Press, 2016), and "Hollywood Thy Name: African American Religion in American Film, 1929-1949" (University of California Press, 2007), among others. Weisenfeld has been awarded the 2017 Albert J. Raboteau Prize for her book on Africana Religions, and her work has been supported by grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the John S. Guggenheim Foundation. She is also the Director of the Henry Luce Foundation-funded Center for Culture, Society, and Religion at Princeton and has appointments in the Departments of African American Studies and History as well as the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Department of Religion and participates in the Executive Committee of the Effron Center for the Study of America. Weisenfeld was honored with the 2020 Graduate Mentoring Award from the Humanities Council and the 2023 Faculty Champion Award for Access, Diversity, and Inclusion from Princeton's Graduate School.
