Dr. Julia Bloch

Biography

Julia Bloch is the Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches a range of courses in English literature and creative writing. She holds a BA in political philosophy from Carleton College, an MFA in creative writing/poetry from Mills College, and a PhD in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests focus on twentieth-century poetry and poetics, exploring themes such as modern and contemporary long poems, formal hybridity, subjectivity, and considerations of race, gender, and sexuality. Bloch's published book, 'Lyric Trade: Reading Subject Postwar Long Poem,' examines the intricacies of lyric poetry in the context of race and gender, critically analyzing the long poem post-1945. She has contributed numerous articles, poems, and reviews to various esteemed literary journals. In addition to her academic work, Bloch has received several awards for her teaching, including the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching, and has been recognized with a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. With years of experience in academia as an educator, editor of the international poetics journal 'Jacket2,' and as an associate director at Kelly Writers House, she continues to be an influential figure in the field of creative writing and literature.
