Biography

Professor Julia Bryant received her PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Sydney in 2001, with her thesis titled "The Nuclear Environment of Radio Galaxy Hosts." She has held various research positions at the University of Sydney, focusing on high redshift radio galaxies, galaxy evolution, astrophotonic developments, and astronomical instrumentation. She is the Director of Astralis-USyd, overseeing three nodes of Australia’s Astronomical Instrumentation Consortium, which includes Macquarie University and the Australian National University. Astralis-USyd specializes in developing photonic fibre devices to enhance astronomical instrumentation and build instruments for the world's largest telescopes. Bryant is a Chief Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence ASTRO-3D. Notably, she led a team that developed new optical imaging fibre bundles (hexabundles) for the SAMI instrument at the Anglo-Australian Telescope, enabling significant advances in integral field spectroscopy of nearby galaxies. Bryant currently leads the Hector project, which involves a new integral-field instrument set to survey 15,000 galaxies from 2023 to 2028, providing insights into galaxy dynamics and evolution. Her research interests include galaxy evolution, astrophotonics, and developing optical infrared devices for future astronomical instruments.
