Dr. Julia Dorin

Biography

Julia Dorin is a Professor of Genetics and Host Defence at the Centre for Inflammation Research. Her research is primarily focused on the function of host defence peptides, which are natural antibiotics produced by living organisms. Her current studies reveal the involvement of these peptides in infertility and obesity, as well as their role in immunomodulation. The laboratory is dedicated to developing potent antimicrobials effective against yeast, bacteria, and viruses, especially in the context of antimicrobial resistance. Julia's work also explores the link between skin disease and immune modulation, while promoting a research culture that fosters integrity and allows team members to thrive. Over the years, her research contributions have included the study of β-defensins, antimicrobial peptides, and their critical functions in innate immunity. Julia has a strong background in host defence mechanisms and has published extensively on the implications of innate immune dysregulation in human diseases. She is also actively engaged in public outreach, encouraging young people's interest in biology through various educational initiatives.
