Julia Dshemuchadse received a Diploma degree in Physics from Technische Universität Dresden, Germany, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Switzerland. During her studies, she conducted crystallographic research on complex intermetallic compounds. After her doctorate, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, where she performed computational research on soft matter self-assembly behavior. Julia joined Cornell University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Her research group investigates abstract model systems to unveil fundamental principles of crystal structure formation and stability, employing a blend of hard and soft condensed matter methods. Julia co-authored a book titled “Intermetallics – Structures, Properties, Statistics,” published by Oxford University Press in 2016. She has received prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award in 2021 and the Machine Learning Chemical Sciences Engineering Award from the Camille Henry Dreyfus Foundation in 2022. In addition to her academic pursuits, Julia enjoys reading, traveling, and exploring the outdoors through biking, hiking, and camping.
