Biography

Julia Eckert holds the chair in Political Anthropology at the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Bern. She specializes in political anthropology and world society, with a focus on changing institutions, democracy, law, and the conditions of increasing interdependence. Her current research interests explore the relationship between moral and legal norms and the responsibilities tied to evolving notions of liability and obligation, as well as security and border regimes, and struggles for citizenship and political participation in the context of social justice. Eckert has conducted research on Hindunationalism, police conflicts, citizenship, and authority in Mumbai, India. Her work extends to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Europe, covering topics like political transition and migration bureaucracy. Julia has led a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and has served as a lecturer at the Humboldt University and the Free University of Berlin where she completed her PhD. She is also a co-editor of the journal Anthropological Theory.
