Biography

Julia Grassl is a Molecular Biologist and Honey Bee Researcher at the University of Western Australia. She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology from Swansea University in the UK in 2007 and relocated to Perth in 2009. As the Group Leader of the Honey Bee Health Research Group, her research focuses on the impacts of genetic diversity, disease, and nutrition on honey bee health. Julia collaborates closely with beekeepers to provide tools and answers for breeding healthy bees and detecting diseases, as well as finding nutrition thresholds using molecular techniques. She is also the program leader for the Cooperative Research Centre for Honey Bee Products, where her work has contributed to building sensors for non-invasive detection of American Foulbrood. Julia's contributions to understanding disease resistance in bees and the effects of nutrition on colony health are significant in promoting a sustainable beekeeping industry.
