Julia R. Greer is the Ruben F. Mettler Professor of Materials Science, Mechanics, and Medical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. She also serves as the Executive Officer of Applied Physics. Greer obtained her Bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997, followed by a Master's and Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2000 and 2005, respectively. After joining Caltech as an Assistant Professor in 2007, she was promoted to Professor in 2013 and became the Mettler Professor in 2019. Her research interests lie at the intersection of nano-scale phenomena and material science, focusing on the mechanical properties of materials engineered at the microstructural level. Greer's work emphasizes the development and characterization of micro- and nano-architected materials and investigates their mechanical, electrochemical, and photonic properties. Through innovative methodologies including 3D lithography and additive manufacturing, her research aims to contribute to the creation of lightweight energy storage systems, damage-tolerant fabrics, and multi-functional materials. As the Fletcher Jones Foundation Director, she is set to lead initiatives in engineering and applied science until 2025.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
