Dr. Julia Handl

Biography

Julia Handl is a Professor in Decision Sciences at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. She is a member of the European Laboratory for Learning Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and has previously held a Medical Research Council Special Training Fellowship in Bioinformatics at the University of Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences. She also gained significant international experience as a visiting researcher at the University of Washington, Seattle. Julia holds a PhD from the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre and has a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, alongside an Honours degree in Computer Science from Monash University, Melbourne. Her research interests lie at the intersection of optimization and machine learning, with a strong focus on unsupervised learning and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). Julia advocates for interdisciplinary research, believing in the potential of mathematical and computational techniques to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. She is recognized for her contributions towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring her work positively impacts various global initiatives.
