Professor Herzen conducts research in biomedical imaging, focusing on the development of new methods for X-ray computed tomography based on spectral detection and X-ray phase contrast in medicine and biology. Utilizing highly brilliant synchrotron radiation as well as standard polychromatic X-ray tubes, her work aims to improve image quality, with a major objective being quantitative imaging that allows extracting element-specific measures from X-ray images. Professor Herzen studied physics at the University of Hamburg, obtaining her doctorate in 2006. Her research included a stay at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland in 2008, followed by work at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in 2010. She has held post-doctoral researcher positions at TUM and completed research at the synchrotron source PETRA III in Hamburg. Additionally, she held an interim professorship at TU Dortmund in 2015 before being appointed as an Assistant Professor at TUM in 2018.
