Biography

Julia Hoffmann-Salz is a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in Ancient History. She obtained her PhD from the University of Bonn in Germany in 2011 and has spent 15 years at the University of Cologne. Her academic journey includes positions at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Mannheim, the University of Bonn, and the University of Freiburg. Julia completed her habilitation in Cologne in 2021 and joined the University of Edinburgh in September 2025. Her research focuses on the ancient Near East, particularly during the Hellenistic and late Roman periods. She is particularly interested in how local communities in these regions responded to changes in political, military, economic, religious, and social conditions. Julia is currently preparing an edited volume based on papers from a conference organized by the University of Mannheim in 2024, titled "The Power of Blood - Blood Ties in Greek and Roman Discourse," which is set to appear in 2026. Additionally, she is working on another edited volume related to workshops titled "Use and Meaning of Caves in the Eastern Mediterranean from 1000 BCE to 1000 CE," funded by the Joint Seed Money Funding Scheme of the Free University of Berlin and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Julia's current research also includes a project on Hellenistic kings and their relations with enemies, with an article to be published on January 13, 2026.
