Dr. Julia Janes

Biography

Julia Janes is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has a PhD from York University and holds Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Economics from the University of Toronto. Her professional experience encompasses community practice aimed at promoting well-being and inclusion for marginalized older adults, clinical crisis intervention, and health advocacy for refugees. Julia's activist work challenges issues of violence, neoliberal capitalism, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic racism. Her current research interests include participatory action research addressing social isolation, exclusion, and displacement. Julia has collaborated on numerous research projects, focusing on positive youth development in racialized communities and the impacts of trafficking on older persons. She is actively engaged in efforts to decolonize education and support Indigenous resurgence through research practice alliances. In her teaching, Julia emphasizes community-based participatory research and incorporates arts-informed methods within social work education. She employs both quantitative and qualitative research approaches to leverage social change effectively.
