Biography

Julia Kneer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam and serves as the chair of the Examination Board at ESHCC. Previously, she worked as an Assistant Professor and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cologne, where she taught theoretical and methodological courses in Media, Social, and Organizational Psychology. Julia earned her degree in Psychology from Saarland University between 1996 and 2001, and she completed her PhD in Social Psychology in 2006 with a focus on the 'Causal Person Model'. Her research interests lie in digital games, exploring perceptions of game players, generational differences, and digital game addiction. Additionally, her research extends to interactive digital media, health communication, heavy metal music, movies, and social cognition. Julia's contributions are published in various academic journals, including Computers in Human Behavior and Psychology of Popular Media Culture. She has also held leadership positions such as the chair of the Games Studies Division of the International Communication Association from 2017 to 2019. Current research projects include Urban Media Engagement and Homies, focusing on media-based identities with empowerment strategies.
