Dr. Julia Mickenberg

Biography

Julia L. Mickenberg is a Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on American cultural history post-1865, children's literature and culture, and radicalism in the United States. She has authored the award-winning book 'Learning Left: Children's Literature, the Cold War, and Radical Politics' (2006) and co-edited influential works such as 'Tales of Rebels: A Collection of Radical Children's Literature' (2008) and the 'Oxford Handbook of Children's Literature' (2011), which received the 2011 Edited Book Award from the Children's Literature Association. Currently, she is working on a book titled 'Revolutionary Desire: American Women, Soviet Dreams,' published by the University of Chicago Press in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Her research interests encompass general U.S. cultural history since 1865, the history of left/radical cultures in the United States, children's literature, U.S. women's history from 1865 to the present, the history of childhood, and the experiences of Americans in the Soviet Union.
