Professor Dr. Julia O Loughlin

Biography

Julia O'Loughlin is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Victoria, primarily focused on Counselling Psychology. She holds a BA with honors from the University of Victoria, a Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and a PhD from UBC. Her areas of expertise encompass sexual health within a biopsychosocial context, exploring themes in sex therapy, and examining intersections of sexuality and gender, including trauma and traditional masculinity ideology. She also specializes in alexithymia and employs cognitive behavioural and mindfulness-based psychotherapy approaches grounded in feminist theory and intersectional analysis. Julia supervises graduate students and is committed to fostering their academic and professional development. Her teaching includes a variety of courses such as Group Processes, Effective Interpersonal Communication, Group Counselling, Diversity and Culture in Counselling, Assessment in Counselling, Skills Practice in Counselling, and Selected Topics in Counselling.
