Biography

Julia Otten is an Associate Professor and senior consultant physician in Endocrinology at Umeå University. Her research primarily focuses on lifestyle-based treatments for type 2 diabetes, examining the effects of diet and physical activity on the disease. She investigates glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and the beta-cell function in relation to lung function and subclinical atherosclerosis in individuals with diabetes. Her work also involves identifying early markers for prediabetes and diabetes, along with studying the impact of plasma proteins on the development of these conditions. Otten conducts intervention studies using dietary strategies, such as Paleolithic diets, and explores the effectiveness of eHealth-based follow-ups compared to traditional in-person visits for achieving diabetes remission. Additionally, she analyzes the physiological changes in individuals with type 2 diabetes when they lose weight and aims to better understand their experiences through qualitative studies. Julia leads the Julia Otten Research Group and coordinates academic courses related to diabetes management in Umeå's Medical Programme.
