Biography

Julia Rochtchina was born and raised in Russia and completed her PhD in Russian Studies from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. Her doctoral thesis examined the dramatic changes in contemporary Russian language, heavily influenced by adaptations from English word structure. Since 2002, Rochtchina has been teaching Russian language and culture at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Her primary research interests include language pedagogy and Russian cultural studies. She is the author of the beginner Russian textbook 'Sputnik: An Introductory Russian Language Course', which consists of two parts, and has been conducting an online Russian tutorial, 'Russian For Everyone', popular for over two decades. Rochtchina has also presented her research at various conferences, discussing topics such as heritage Russian in Canada and standardizing Russian language curriculum in Canadian universities.
