Dr. Julia Smith

Biography

Julia Smith is an Associate Member and General Editor for the Oxford Traherne project at the University of Oxford. Her research interests encompass manuscript studies, textual editing, and early modern religious literature, with a specific focus on the works of Thomas Traherne, a seventeenth-century devotional writer. As the General Editor of a comprehensive 15-volume edition of Traherne's work, commissioned by Oxford University Press, she leads an international interdisciplinary team of editors. This project includes the production of a fully annotated critical edition of Traherne's works, providing rigorous textual analysis and in-depth exploration of their relationship to contemporary religious, political, and intellectual contexts. In addition to her editorial duties, Smith is currently completing a biography of Traherne. At the University of Oxford, she has taught various courses focusing on early modern and eighteenth-century literature and has supervised multiple M. Phil. and D. Phil. students working in the domain of Traherne studies. She is particularly interested in supervising potential D. Phil. candidates in this area.
