Biography

Julia Spaniol received her doctorate in cognitive psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and subsequently completed postdoctoral work at Duke University Medical Center and the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest in Toronto. In 2007, she directed the Memory Decision Processes (MAD) lab in the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She held the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2, NSERC) in Cognitive Aging from 2014 to 2024. Her research focuses on the interplay of cognition, emotion, motivation, and age-related changes across these domains. Current projects aim to investigate the impact of emotional arousal on decision-making, and the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in cognitive engagement and performance. The MAD Lab employs a combination of behavioral and brain-based methods, including eye tracking, event-related potentials, and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Spaniol teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, and welcomes inquiries from individuals interested in participating in research, volunteering, and collaborating.
