Biography

Julia Stoyanovich is an Associate Professor at the Center for Data Science at New York University. She directs the NYU Tandon Center for Responsible AI and is a member of the Visualization and Data Analytics Research Center. Her research focuses on responsible data management and analysis, particularly in operationalizing concepts such as fairness, diversity, transparency, and data protection throughout the data lifecycle. Stoyanovich established the Data, Responsibly consortium and served on the New York City Automated Decision Systems Task Force through a mayoral appointment. In addition to her work in data ethics, her research interests include management and analysis of preference data and querying large evolving graphs. Stoyanovich received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Columbia University and her B.S. in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has five years of experience in the start-up industry as a software developer, data architect, and database administrator, which motivates her work to engage with real datasets and deliver impactful results to research communities and end users. Open-source systems and stand-alone prototypes are part of her research output.
