Dr. Julia Van Weert

Biography

Julia van Weert is a Professor of Health Communication at the University of Amsterdam, where she also serves as the Head of the Department of Communication Science. Her research focuses on the intersection of health communication and digital technologies, investigating how these tools can enhance patient-provider interactions and overall health outcomes, particularly for underprivileged and vulnerable populations. With a background in persuasive communication, her work includes significant contributions to the understanding of health equity and effective communication strategies catered to individuals with limited health literacy. She is the founding director of the Amsterdam Center for Health Communication and co-leads the national Gravitation program AlgoSoc, focusing on public values in algorithm-driven societies. With over 250 publications, Julia is internationally recognized for her contributions and has received numerous prestigious awards, including being elected as a Fellow of the International Communication Association. She is also actively involved in high-impact projects related to AI in health communication, including NWO and EU-funded initiatives. Julia's expertise encompasses eHealth, mHealth, and the role of digital information in shaping health outcomes for diverse populations.
