Biography

Julia Wolfe is an internationally celebrated composer and a 2016 MacArthur Fellow. She received the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her work 'Anthracite Fields,' which draws on oral histories and interviews that depict the labor history of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Region. In the 2025-26 season, Wolfe's music will be featured in distinctive residencies in England with the BBC Symphony and in Belgium at Bozar, presenting yearlong celebrations of her music. Her recent orchestra piece 'Liberty Bell' premiered with the Houston Symphony in September 2025 and will have its New York premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2026. Wolfe is known for her large-scale works that explore poignant moments from American history, such as 'Fire in my Mouth,' commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, which addresses the subject of immigrant women in New York’s garment industry at the turn of the century. Other significant pieces include multi-media works and collaborations with various artists, including theater artist Anna Deavere Smith and architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Julia Wolfe founded and serves as co-artistic director of the New York-based music collective Bang on a Can.
