Julian Gardner FREng joined the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick in 1987. He obtained his physics degree from Birmingham University, followed by a PhD in physical electronics from Cambridge University and a DSc in Electronic Engineering from Warwick University. With over five years of experience as an R&D Engineer in the industry, he has dedicated more than 30 years to the field of chemical microsensors at Warwick University, where he is currently a Professor of Electronic Engineering. Gardner founded electronic nose companies in the 1990s and 2000s, co-founded Cambridge CMOS Sensors Ltd in 2008 as Chief Technology Officer, and sold the company in 2016 to ams. He is also the founder of university spin-outs Flusso Ltd and Sorex Sensor Ltd. His expertise encompasses the design of MEMS-based chemical sensors, signal processing, data analysis of sensor arrays, and electronic noses and tongues. Gardner has published over 500 papers, authored 10 books, and holds 20 patents. His work has been recognized with awards and medals from organizations such as the IET and IEEE, including the Royal Society Mullard Award for innovation in November 2018. His current research interests focus on chemical and environmental microsensors, MEMS devices, smart devices, electronic noses, and artificial intelligence-based signal data processing.
