Biography

Julian Go is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago, where he also serves as a Faculty Affiliate in the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture. His research examines social logics and the impacts of empires and colonialism, alongside postcolonial and decolonial thought. He has authored several important works including 'American Empire: Politics and Meaning' (Duke University Press, 2008) and 'Patterns of Empire: British and American Empires, 1688-Present' (Cambridge, 2011). His forthcoming book, 'Policing Empires: Militarization, Race, and the Imperial Boomerang' (Cambridge, 2024), continues his exploration of these themes. Julian's contributions to historical sociology are widely recognized, and he has received several awards including the Lewis Coser Award for Theoretical Agenda Setting in Sociology from the American Sociological Association. In addition to his publications, Go's work has been featured in a Netflix documentary directed by Academy Award nominee Yance Ford. He is currently the President of the Social Science History Association, demonstrating his leadership within the academic community.
