Biography

Professor Griffin obtained his DPhil from the University of Oxford, where he studied brain biochemistry using 13C NMR spectroscopy in the lab of Sir. Prof. George Radda. He worked at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as a Fellow in Radiology, applying 13C NMR to study cardiac metabolism as a post-doctoral researcher in the lab of Prof. Jeremy Nicholson. At Imperial College London, he developed metabonomic tools for environmental toxicology. Griffin then took a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at Imperial College and later moved to the University of Cambridge as a group leader in the Department of Biochemistry. He was also the group leader at MRC Human Nutrition Research and a Professor of Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Cambridge. In 2019, he returned to Imperial College to take the Chair in Biological Chemistry and lead the Section of Biomolecular Medicine in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion, and Reproduction. His group's research focuses on understanding how diet interacts with the relative risk of developing metabolic diseases, particularly using metabolomics and lipidomics to understand the underlying mechanisms of disease. His research utilizes cell culture, animal studies, human intervention trials, and human cohort studies to explore these mechanisms. Professor Griffin has served as President of the Metabolomics Society and as director of the Metabolic Profiling Forum. He is a recipient of the Agilent Thought Leader Award in lipidomics, and his research is funded by organizations such as MRC, the EU 2020, Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Alzheimer’s Society, and NIHR.
