Dr. Julian Levinson

Biography

Julian Levinson has been teaching at the University of Michigan since 2000, focusing on subjects within the realm of American Jewish Studies. He offers a diverse range of courses related to American Jewish Culture, Jewish Storytelling, Bible Literature, the Holocaust, and introductory classes on Judaism and Jewish civilization. He is the author of 'Exiles on Main Street: Jewish American Writers and American Literature Culture,' which won the 2008 National Jewish Book Award. Additionally, Levinson has contributed scholarly articles, chapters, and encyclopedia entries to various publications. Over the years, he has developed a profound interest in Yiddish language, history, and literature, actively engaging in efforts to preserve Yiddish culture and share its richness with broader audiences. Recently, he has devoted his efforts to translating literary works from Yiddish, including the translation of 'Flames of the Earth,' a novel by the Lodz Ghetto survivor-novelist Isaiah Spiegel, published by Northwestern University Press.
