Dr. Julian Naglik

Biography

Julian Naglik graduated with a BSc from the University of East London in 1992 and obtained his PhD from King’s College London in 2001, where he studied the expression of secreted aspartyl proteinases in the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Appointed as a Lecturer in 2006 and promoted to Reader in 2013, he became a Professor in 2016. He previously held positions as a visiting research scientist at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin and the University of California San Francisco. Currently, he leads research in Fungal Pathogenesis and Immunology at the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions in the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London. His research has significantly advanced understanding of host-fungal interactions, particularly in developing vivo transcript profiling techniques and identifying critical epithelial signaling pathways that differentiate between commensal and pathogenic forms of C. albicans. His recent work on candidalysin, a cytolytic peptide toxin, identified its crucial role in driving epithelial damage during C. albicans mucosal infections, leading to a seminal advancement in the field of microbiology and Candida pathogenesis. He has received major research funding from organizations such as the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council, and has been recognized by various awards from the German Mycological Society and the British Society for Medical Mycology.
