Biography

Julian Roberts holds an LL.M. from the University of London and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. In 2023, Julian was appointed King's Counsel (Honorary) in recognition of his contributions to sentencing in England and Wales internationally. He received the 2022 Sellin-Glueck Award from the American Society of Criminology for his scholarship in Criminal Justice, with a focus on international and comparative perspectives. Julian was a member of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales from 2008 to 2018 and is currently the Executive Director of the Sentencing Academy, a London-based institute that connects scholars and practitioners while promoting public understanding of sentencing. He has published numerous works, including the book 'Paying Past' (with Richard Frase), published by Oxford University Press in 2019. Julian has collaborated on 21 scholarly volumes, addressing various aspects of sentencing, and has served as a visiting professor at several universities. His work encompasses research on the use of prior convictions in sentencing guidelines through projects like the Criminal History Project at the University of Minnesota.
