Julian Schaap is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts and Culture Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research interests lie at the intersection of cognitive cultural sociology, social stratification, and cultural production, with a particular focus on popular music. His dissertation, completed with honors in October 2019, explored the (re)production of whiteness and masculinity in rock music reception. Julian's research has been recognized with the Praemium Erasmianum Dissertation Prize and the Erasmus University Research Award, both in 2020. He co-authored a book on gender inequality in metal music production published in 2018. Julian teaches various sociology courses and is the co-organizer of the Music Talks symposium series.
