Biography

Julian Scholtes joined the Law School as a Lecturer in Public Law in autumn 2022. Prior to this role, he served as a Lecturer in EU Public Law at Newcastle University from 2021 to 2022. Julian completed his PhD as a researcher at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, from 2017 to 2022. He obtained an LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of Edinburgh in 2016 and completed his undergraduate studies in Maastricht, Netherlands, and Ankara, Turkey. His research interests have increasingly focused on the juridification of values within the European legal order and the discursive construction of what is termed 'European constitutionalism'. He is particularly interested in the legacies of democratic transition in Central and Eastern Europe and how these legacies continue to define and shape ideas surrounding European constitutionalism more generally.
