Julian Thompson joined University College London’s Geography Department as an undergraduate in October 1988, graduating with a first-class Bachelor of Science in Geography in June 1991. He began his career at UCL as a research assistant on an IUCN-funded project focusing on the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands in Northeast Nigeria, which culminated in a part-time PhD awarded in 1995. His post-doctoral work continued to address these wetlands, expanding his research to include UK lowland wet grassland and wetland water management in Asia. In September 1997, he joined the academic staff at UCL Geography as a Lecturer and was promoted through various ranks, culminating in his appointment as Professor of Physical Geography - Hydrology Wetlands in October 2018. Over his career, he has held several administrative roles, including Deputy Head of Department and Undergraduate Tutor. Currently, he serves as Co-Director of the NERC-funded TREES Doctoral Landscape Award, which is an interdisciplinary PhD training programme involving ten universities and research institutions.
