Julianne Ip graduated from Brown University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and completed a 7-year continuum program, receiving her MD from Brown Medical School in 1978. She has spent her entire career at Brown, including completing her residency in Family Medicine at Memorial Hospital, where she served as chief resident in 1981. After her residency, Ip became a staff physician in the Urgent Care Unit at Rhode Island Group Health Association, eventually moving to Harvard-Pilgrim Health Plan, where she served as Chief of the Urgent Visit/Trauma units for 18 years. Currently, she is a clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine, where she teaches courses such as PLME Senior Seminar and Introductory Medical Illustration, as well as offering a summer course for high school students interested in medicine.
