Biography

Julianne K. Viola is a postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre for Higher Education Research Scholarship (CHERS) at Imperial College London. She leads the Social Ties Student Lives Project, which is ongoing until 2025, and contributes to the educational research evaluation efforts of the college. As a developer of the Education Evaluation Toolkit, she has led projects focusing on Belonging, Engagement, and Community (BEC) and Imperial Bursary projects from 2019 to 2024. Dr. Viola completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford, where her research explored how adolescents develop civic identities in the digital age and the conceptualizations of citizenship. She has collaborated with researchers from Harvard University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has worked with the data analytics startup Panorama Education to develop reliable student perception surveys that have reached 3.2 million students across 380 districts and 4,800 schools. Her particular research interests lie in the civic identity development of young people and their efficacy and engagement in communities, especially concerning political engagement and activism activities.
