Biography

Julie Ober Allen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on health disparities, particularly the mechanisms generating chronic disease burden disparities among older adults in the United States. She investigates how chronic stressors tied to social inequities—such as ageism, discrimination, race and gender expectations, and adverse life events—impact behaviors, biological responses, and psychosocial factors, thereby affecting health outcomes. Her work emphasizes ageism and its health implications, including Black-White health disparities and the links to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multimorbidity, and cancer. Dr. Allen aims to inform community, societal, and policy-level changes to promote health and reduce disparities among older adults. She completed her Master of Public Health and PhD at the School of Public Health, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Additionally, she has made media contributions, including feature stories on combating ageism.
