Julie Yujie Chen is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information, Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga and holds a graduate appointment at the Faculty of Information. She earned her PhD in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. Before joining the University of Toronto, she served as a Lecturer in the School of Media, Communication, Sociology at the University of Leicester. Her research interests include the study of culture and digital technologies, and how established economic structures shape the experience and perception of work. She co-authored 'Media Management' published by University of Minnesota Press in 2021 and 'Super-sticky WeChat in Chinese Society' by Emerald in 2018. Dr. Chen's contributions to the field have been recognized with the Top Paper Award from the Communication Technology Division of the International Communication Association in 2021. She is the founding editor of 'Platforms & Society' and co-editor of the forthcoming 'SAGE Handbook of Digital Labour' expected in 2025. Furthermore, she actively participates in scholarly communities by serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cultural Economy and the Chinese Journal of Communication. As a principal investigator, she leads research projects funded by prominent institutions, including Canada's Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada, as well as the International Labour Organization in Switzerland. She has also been recognized as a Senior Fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto.
