Biography

Julie Cruikshank is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Her research centers on theoretical developments in oral tradition studies, focusing on how different forms of knowledge intersect in the context of legitimacy struggles. With extensive ethnographic experience in the Yukon Territory, Cruikshank dedicated significant time to recording the life stories of Athapaskan and Tlingit elders. Her comparative research includes studies in both Alaska and Siberia. Currently, she is exploring theoretical connections between anthropology, memory, and environmental anthropology, investigating encounters between historical and contemporary environmental sciences and indigenous oral traditions in regions designated as World Heritage Sites along the borders of Yukon, northwest British Columbia, and Alaska.
