Biography

Julie Deschepper is an Assistant Professor in the Heritage Museum Studies in Cultural History section at Utrecht University. She is a trained historian specializing in material culture and socialism, with a focus on cultural heritage in the USSR. Her work navigates the intersections of cultural history, critical heritage studies, and art history, analyzing the complexities of heritage discourses, uses, practices, and experiences. Julie teaches courses within the MA Cultural History and Heritage program and co-organizes the Heritage Lab. She holds a PhD from the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (Inalco, Paris), where she was awarded the Inalco PhD Prize in 2019. Her dissertation, which is being developed into a monograph titled 'Les temps du patrimoine. Une histoire matérielle de la Russie (1917-2017)', forthcoming from CNRS Edition, delves into the (de-)heritagization processes of Soviet monuments and contributes to understanding Russia's material culture in the context of heritage in the Western world. Julie is also actively engaged in contemporary issues surrounding heritage, including the use of culture during the war in Ukraine, and is a co-founder of the Research Collective on Contemporary Russia, focusing on new trajectories (CORUSCANT). Furthermore, she serves as a co-coordinator of the Francophone Network of the Association for Critical Heritage Studies.
