Julie Ju-Youn Kim, FAIA, is a licensed architect, educator, and researcher whose work bridges material innovation with public interest technology and community-centered design. As the Chair and William H. Harrison Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Architecture, she engages in teaching and research that advances architecture as a civic instrument, linking academia, practice, industry, and communities in pursuit of equitable and resilient futures. Professor Kim is the founder and director of the Flourishing Communities Collaborative (FC2), which utilizes Public Interest Technology to merge data-driven research with participatory design methods. Her projects aim to address social and cultural issues within the built environment, enabling architecture to authentically center community expertise while developing actionable, place-based strategies. Her work cultivates a design culture rooted in empathy, technical rigor, and creative experimentation, with the common goal of empowering a new generation of architects to view design as a professional pursuit that influences innovation and social impact. Professor Kim teaches advanced design and research studios in the Master of Architecture program and has previously taught in the Bachelor of Science in Architecture program.
