Biography

Julie Lessard and her team are working to elucidate the role of a new family of genes in the self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation of normal and leukemic hematopoietic stem cells. Their research suggests that therapies specifically targeted at cancer stem cells could be effective in eradicating tumors. Key research themes include hematopoietic stem cells, leukemic stem cells, hematopoiesis, leukemia, chromatin remodeling complexes of the FAF family, quantitative proteomics, and molecular genetics. Specific research interests focus on chromatin structure and stem cell biology, the roles of BAF complex subunits in the self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), generation of conditional alleles in mice, and the functions of BAF complex subunits in leukemic stem cells (LSCs). Lessard's findings have identified essential BAF subunits for HSC function and targeted therapeutic opportunities in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
