Biography

Julie Sandell is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, where she has been a faculty member since 1991. She received her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 and her AB from Princeton University in 1979. As a retinal neuroanatomist, her research focuses on anatomical changes in the retina associated with retinitis pigmentosa in both humans and animal models including rabbits, rats, dogs, and pigs. Julie also served as the Vice Chair of the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology and has held various administrative roles, including Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Chair of the Faculty Council at Boston University. In 2001, she was honored with the Stanley L. Robbins Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest teaching accolade within the medical school. Sandell has been actively involved in research, serving as principal investigator for several significant grants, particularly those related to cognitive functions and retinal degeneration. Her contributions to neuroscience and medical education have been widely recognized.
